What is a Food Waste Depackager and Separator?

A food waste depackager and separator is a mechanical device that opens inedible packaged food wrapping and bags and separates the packaging from the organic (food) and any other unwanted items and miscellaneous contaminants.

The organic (waste food) content is deposited in a separate output stream and the packaging (usually mostly plastic), is deposited in a separate receptacle (skip (dumpster) or container).

More advanced models will include automatic feed and discharge and output only clean plastic.

As grit sand and silt are often also found in food waste, especially in pre-consumer food waste, so separation of these may also be included.

Good practice demands that all this inedible food is, if possible, reused in accordance with the priorities of the waste hierarchy before applying depackaging and separation.

Even when as much food as possible is recovered for food banks and animal feed,

there still remains off-spec packaged food that originates from out-of-date, spoilt, mislabelled, and damaged products.

 

The organic output is often digested in an anaerobic digestion facility to make renewable energy (preferred), or commercially composted.
